Proposals sought for Photographic Installation project at Connells Bay Sculpture Park
New Zealand artists are invited to submit concept proposals for a Photographic Installation project at the Connells Bay Sculpture Park on Waiheke Island.
The Project
The commission is for one photographic image and an original print of that image. The image will be laser printed (at Connells Bay’s cost) onto PVC for installation on an outside landscape-framed billboard structure 5m x 2.5m at the Connells Bay Sculpture Park, Waiheke Island. The original print is to be exactly scaled at 500mm x 250mm. Both the image and the original print will become the property of the Connells Bay Sculpture Trust. A panel comprising Ben Plumbly, Art Director at Art + Object and members of the Trust will select the chosen artist.
Budget
The chosen artist will be paid $6,000 plus GST for their work. This sum is to cover all the costs associated with the creative design, supply and printing of the original print and the image on a CD Rom for subsequent laser printing.
Content
No restrictions are placed on what the content of the image may be. Images of two previous photographic commissions undertaken at Connells Bay are shown on our website under Sculpture Park/artists.
Successful applicants will be confident working on a large scale, will be familiar with modern, digital-based photographic technologies and will be able to produce images of power and resonance which stand up in an increasingly media-saturated and globalized, multi-cultural 21st Century New Zealand.
Submissions
Interested artists should submit a brief of their proposed image with a description of how they intended carrying out the commission should they be chosen. Please supply a CV of your previous work and experience. All proposals will be retained for archival purposes. Any work not selected may, with the consent of the artist, be considered for installation at a future date.
Timeframe
Submissions must be received by 31 August 2009.
The Trustees will make their decision by 15th September 2009.
The completed works are to be delivered to the Connells Bay Sculpture Trust by 15th October 2009.
The printed image will initially be installed at Connells Bay Sculpture Park until 30th April 2010 and thereafter as determined by the Trustees.
Connells Bay Sculpture Park
Connells Bay Sculpture Park is situated on Waiheke Island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, 30 minutes by boat from downtown Auckland and a further 30 minute drive to the property. It operates through a charitable trust, the Connells Bay Sculpture Trust. The Trustees’ vision is to unite art and nature by planting sweeps of native trees and creating special places for commissioned site-specific, purchased and installation sculpture by New Zealand artists. New works are added each year. The park currently contains 27 sculptures by some of New Zealand’s most well known artists. Works are set in a coastal native bush environment with commanding views of the Hauraki Gulf.
The park is part of a centre for sculpture that includes the Gowshed Gallery comprising a visitor’s centre, a library of contemporary publications on sculpture and a gallery of works for sale. Visits to the property are by prior appointment only and includes a 2 hour + guided walk. Over 4,000 visitors have visited the property since it first opened in 2003.
You are welcome to visit the sculpture park before submitting your proposal but it is important to make a prior appointment before doing so. In any event, we encourage you to visit our website.
If this proposal is of interest to you then please send your submission no later than 31 August 2009.
